20) Appiah is making his statement that our world is made of multiple different groups for which practice and conduct business in ways that are normal for their culture, but completely are not understood in other styles of living. Like Foer, globalization exists in Appiah essay, in that over time the tribes and cultures begin to form with the differences inherited over time. 5. Both Foer and Appiah introduce their essays with a narrative that is relative to their own experiences and lifestyle. I truly enjoy reading information that is relevant to the writer. The initial story put in the mode to continue reading about their opinions and arguments. A narrative introduction relates a sequence of events and can be especially effective if you thing you need to coax indifferent or reluctant readers into taking an interest in the topic. Their conclusion brings your back to the big picture about the argument. While reading both essays, I found lost in the middle while reading, but comprehended the final thoughts as the essay narrowed to the gist of the conversation. While spending some time in the military, I came to realize that globalization was happening during times of war. Of course, this transformation has taken decades to construct, but it has definitely caught my attention. I spent 12 months in Kandahar, Afghanistan and witness multiple countries come together and accomplish missions that were unthinkable in the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.
