Question 3 [ Actual Question Embedded ]: Aging workers of the Neotropical termite, Neocapritermes taracua , develop blue crystal containing glands ("backpacks") on their backs, When they fight intruding termites and are hampered, these "blue" termites explode, and the glands spew a sticky liquid (Šobotník et al. 2012). The following data are from an experiment that measured the toxicity of the blue substance. A single drop of the liquid extracted from blue termites was placed on individuals of a second termite species, Labiotermes labralis , and the number that were immobilized (dead or paralyzed) within 60 minutes was recorded. The frequency of this outcome was compared with a control treatment in which liquid from glands of "white" termites lacking the blue crystals was dropped instead. Is the blue liquid toxic compared to liquid from white termites? Liquid Source Unharmed Immobilized Blue Workers 3 37 White Workers 31 9 [Explanation of Chart: copied from textbook, please reference book] Answers: (1) H 0 : The proportion of immobilized individuals is the same between liquid from blue an white workers H A : The proportion of immobilized individuals is not the same between liquid from blue and white workers [ Please Note: please continue to next page to find the rest of 21 (end of assignment) ] (2) The expected values based on the information given above can be presented in the following chart: Liquid Source Unharmed Immobilized Total [Blue or White Workers] Blue Workers 17 37 40 White Workers 17 9 40 Total [Unharmed or Immobilized] 34 46 80 [Explanation of Chart: this chart depicts the EXPECTED data extrapolated from the observed data above] [Explanation of Computation: the value below is test statistic value; the formula is the following: Observed Expected ¿ 2 ¿ ¿ X 2 = Σ ¿ ] 5

Further Explanation: the X 2 (test statistic) value is 40.10; the df (degrees of freedom) value is 1; critical value X 0.05 2 = 3.84 , since 40.10 > 3.84 and P < 0.05 ; also, because X 2 is greater than 10.83, we know for certain P < 0.001 ; we reject null hypothesis (H 0 )! The contents found in the blue packets are toxic. [ END OF ASSIGNMENT 9 ] 6

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
