The prince loses so the king gets Vatel. Vatel does not want to leave his people to go work at Versailles. Anne tells Vatel that the Prince gave him away during the card game “like a hound from his kennels.”

When there are not enough fish to feed the people and the king is wanting Vatel to go to Versailles, he lets his last parrot go and kills himself with his sword just after hearing that the fish shipment has arrived in time. He had realized that he was not a master of the festivities but rather a slave. People told the King that Vatel killed himself bc of the fish to not upset him. The prince became general during the war thanks to Vatel’s festivities. The one annoying creep sends 3 men to attack Vatel for making fun of him but the king’s brothers men come and save him. Vatel spins a romantic tale illustrating the arrogance and social irresponsibility of the king’s courtly entourage. Bourgeoisie- Those who live in the borough or people of the city including merchants and craftsmen. Belonged to the middle or upper middle class Peasants- lived outside the walls of the city in rural areas including farmers
