Create a strong, clear thesis statement agreeing or disagreeing with Etzioni while referencing his claims, which will be the controlling idea of the paper, in which everything must support the thesis. Don’t assume the Testing Office readers have read Etzioni’s essay. Here is a helpful page: Since the assignment is to agree or disagree with Etzioni’s claims in his article, rewrite the paper that not only includes your own ideas, but responds and refers to each of Etzioni’s claims, citing correctly. Introduce the author and article in the introductory paragraph with a brief summary. Create strong, developed paragraphs: The typical pattern is: 1) Topic sentence in your own words 2) Evidence that provides support and credibility to topic sentence claim 3) Explanatory or interpretive statements about the evidence and your claim - don't repeat the information, but discuss how the evidence provides and extends the discussion of your topic and claim 4) Paragraph concluding sentence that wraps up that paragraph topic, while transitioning to the next paragraph, positioning the reader to follow the logic and flow easily ALL references to an author - summary, paraphrasing, and quoting – MUST be cited to give author credit and avoid a charge of plagiarism.
