and planted crops that brought them revenue. The same black people took care of their homes, children, and family. This showed that the whites needed the black too. All Booker T Washington was asking for was for the white people to acknowledge that the black people were of importance to them and should be treated as such. Giving the black people an education would have made it better for them to be able to relate with the whites. He was encouraging togetherness in order to promote peace and retain their freedom. One really good metaphor in his speech that I reflected on was when he said, “we can be as separate as the fingers, yet one as the hand in all things essential to mutual progress.” Fingers can do certain things on their own without the need to come together. For instance, if you have an itch, one finger alone can relieve it but, when it comes to something like cooking or lifting up an item, you need all your finger to cooperate together in order for that purpose to be successful.
