Growing crops of little bit of manipulation for corn and gourds. Accumulating a lot of things to store these things. - -building structures- BALLCOURTS -ritualized fight and an example of community coming together and building stuff. Ballgame becomes a focus of community activity, rivalry, and marketing! - sculptures-of how these ballgames were played. They were spectators that watched the game and another person waiting for the ball, referees, etc. something intense is going on during these ballgames and it was part of their culture. Both high and low ranking people played together. using mineral pigments and grounds bits of flower to make paint and you can actually see the paint remainings. Major cultural groups 1. Lowlands-Olmecs culture that are building upon these ballgames as a way of bringing culture. Olmecs Culture- 1200-400 b.c. - they have a distinct and fancy styles in kinds of arts and sculptures. BIG chunkous baby with a long head and skull cap! And baby with fangs. -their art captures rituals as well -they are in the narrow neck of Mexico -2 sites for well known for olmec culture: La Venta and San Lorenzo -big stone heads!!!!!; they are spending a lot of time making these -these sculptures are very spread.

-it was a MOTHER CULTURE-shared cultural expression in a pretty big area- it sets the tone for future developments. -its still not quite the complex society that are like Egypt. -development of calendar and writing -600 b.c.-earliest symbol system, calendar, and idea of counting -but you don’t need a calendar to be a good farmer -political leadership through the calendar system: a way of marking time so that everyone knows what important things are happening and when they are happening. -highlands: Monte Alban- *read in more detail on pg. 612; really hard to work with; but it comes along when calendar system begins. get some decorative elements that help us to understand how these cultures work and they represented themselves. Like famous sculptures called Danzante figures meaning, “dancers.” In detail, these are guys that guys whose guts are being poured out.
