Behavior and Traits Sinek stated that the greatest leaders behave differently than other leaders (TED Talks, 2009). He stated that the greatest leaders focused on why instead of what (TED Talks, 2009). To be an effective leader, an individual will need to do more than shift focus. A leader's job is to accomplish the shared objectives of the people in an organization (Yukl, 2013). To accomplish the shared objectives, a leader must behave in ways that benefit those objectives (Yukl, 2013). Self-Leadership An important thing that a leader should possess is self-leadership. Gomez and Regent University describe (2013) self-leadership as what an individual does to himself or herself to accomplish set goals. Self-leadership is further divided into two concepts: (a) self-motivation and (b) self-direction (Gomez and Regent University, 2013). Self-motivation is what an individual does to himself or herself to keep motivated (Gomez and Regent University, 2013). Self-direction is setting goals or oneself (Gomez and Regent University, 2013). A leader who practices self-leadership will be able to work towards both individual and organizational goals more effectively (Gomez and Regent University, 2013). Conclusion The greatest leaders will focus on why something is being done (TED Talks, 2009). In an organization, a leader’s job is to work towards the company’s goals (Yukl, 2012).
