The main boundaries that divide the city into four quadrants are US Highway 290 and US Highway 71 that are at the heart of the city. Many roads and intersections divide the eastern quadrants, and many roads and the Southern Pacific Railroad further divide the western quadrants. The northern border is stopped at Boundary Street and the southern border is the intersection of US Highway 77 and FM 448 (“Map of Giddings, Texas”, 2019). The local schools and Sheriff’s department are located outside of these boundaries. The area I chose to survey is know as the Downtown Giddings and located in the heart of the city where the two main highways cross. 4465-5_19
● Housing and Zoning What is the age of the houses? Describe type of construction material, appearance, and general condition. Do you see single family housing? Multi-family housing ? Most of the houses in the area were built in the 1950s and since then renovated but a few new houses have come up in the area. Driving through the area most of the older houses have siding or are brick. Some are worn down but most are well kept because of city ordinances. The new houses in the area are mostly rock or metal barn houses. From what I can see in the area most housing is single family. There is an older apartment complex to the back of boundary area that some spots were well kept and others not. ● Common Meeting Places Where do people in the neighborhood hang out? Who hangs out there and what hours of the day ? In the boundary area there is nowhere for people to go and hang out other than personal properties. Many churches are in the area and provide for evening activities and gatherings. There is a local bowling alley on the western side of town that people gather on Tuesday nights for league night. There are local bar and grills outside of town that are popular on the weekends in the evening. These include the Bullpen, Walsh Store, and the Wagon Stop. There are two community parks that can be found busy in spring and early summer. Also, there is a community swimming pool that is popular during the summer months. Lastly, the golf course is located on the eastern side of town and as become very popular in the last few years especially on 4465-5_19
Saturday and Sunday mornings. ● Indicators of Growth or Decline Is this a “thriving” community or does it look “run down?” Is there new or ongoing construction? Businesses and Industries coming to the area? Are buildings, roadways, and public areas clean and well-kept. Do you see dirt, trash, or graffiti ? Giddings is a thriving community with many upcoming businesses. The roads have been recently redone on the main highways. Certain areas of the community do look run down but are the older areas. Overall the public areas are clean and well kept. No trash or graffiti was seen other than a historic “1999 seniors” on the side of one of the local restaurants. The streets are clean, yards well kept, and families can be seen outside enjoying there summer time.
