6) Shown below is the common or conventional unit cell of the face centered cubic lattice, which is not a primitive unit cell, inclusive of the unit cell spanning unit vectors a 1 , a 2 , a 3 . i) How many lattice points does this unit cell contain? ii) List the coordinates of the lattice points in this unit cell. iii) Sketch into the drawing the primitive unit cell of this lattice.

7) The crystal structure of the cubic ZnS sphalerite (or Zinc Blende)can be described in terms of the Bravais lattice and the motif.as follows: Face Centered Cubic Lattice (cF) with a Motif of one Zn atom at position 0,0,0 relative to each lattice point and one S atom at position ¼ , ¼ , ¼ , relative to each of the lattice points. (i) List the positions of all the Zn and all the S atoms in the unit cell. (ii) Make a perspective drawing of the unit cell representation of the cubic ZnS sphalerite (or Zinc Blende) crystal structure. 8) How many atoms comprise the motif of a cF- or FCC-crystal, which has a unit cell that contains 56 atoms?

What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

Kiran Temple University Fox School of Business ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

Dana University of Pennsylvania ‘17, Course Hero Intern

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
