Thomas Jefferson was a thinker during the Enlightenment period who like Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi followed naturalism. Defined by Moreland (2007), “naturalism: everything is a collection of entities of the sort the sciences are about, and all truth is determined ultimately by the truths about these basic scientific entities” (p. 41). All of these thinkers, believed the organized religions and monarchies obstructed societal advances (Gutek, 2011). Unlike Rousseau, Jefferson received a formal education (Gutek, 2011). Rousseau created his own learning plans to teach himself (Gutek, 2011). Like Rousseau and Pestalozzi, Thomas Jefferson was against undemocratic government and church governed schools (Gutek, 2011). Jefferson worked on the separation of church and state and felt the churchgovernance of universities stifled liberties of investigations and scrutiny (Gutek, 2011). Jefferson was a huge statesman of a revolution in education and the 13 American colonies (Gutek, 2011). Rousseau and Pestalozzi believed in natural education without governance where reform would come from self and not by a revolutionary approach (Gutek, 2011).ReferencesGutek, G. L. I know I have already responded to your post on my forum, but I found that the Enlightenment Era had some interesting philosophers and philosophies that were developed during that time. You already brought up the point that Jefferson and Rousseau were raised very differently when it came to educational backgrounds. Rousseau lost so much as a child and seemed to face a lot of tragedy in his upbringing while Jefferson seemed very fortunate with his education and his family. Unlike Rousseau, Jefferson's dad passed away when he was 21 years old. When his dad did pass away, he left Jefferson 5,000 acres of land with a plantation home and slaves. Jefferson came from a wealthier background and a father who was heavily involved in politics which gave him an insight to knowing how to be in the field of politics and getting connections for different aspects of life. One similarity I did notice between Jefferson and Rousseau however, was the fact that they both thought education should be valued at an early age and that children have the right to a good education. I find this inspiring that both Jefferson and Rousseau were able to take their backgrounds and use them to further the educational system. ReferenceGutek, G. L. (2011).
