The merged artwork takes the name of the top layer More layers larger file size Merging layers o reduces file size o once merged, cannot be unmerged can’t manipulate layers individually Best to keep layers segregated to keep options open for any modifications as project evolves Ways layers are created: o Create new layer button on layers panel o New layer command in layers panel menu o Duplicate existing layer o Paste artwork from another file The duplicate is created in the same position on the layer immediately above the targeted layer Ctrl+J duplicate layer Copy merged: copies the visible image on the canvas as a single image, copies a merged result of all visible layers The copied artwork is pasted on a new layer above the targeted layer. The new artwork will always be isolated in its own layer and won’t directly affect any existing artwork in the file.
