Large multinucleate cells responsible for the active erosion of bone minerals. Formed by the fusion of several precursor cells and contain large numbers of mitochondria and lysosomes . These cells manufacture and utilize various chemical enzymes to literally digest away bone tissue. Each day is marked by a discreet cycle of first osteoblast and subsequently osteoclast activity.
