Boundaries within a family can be viewed as open or closed. In the family system there isalways a way to include and exclude information so that all the elements seem clear to the all parties. In social work communication is completed across those of race, class, gender and sexualpreferences. These define the boundaries that exist; however, these boundaries must be identifiedand overcome (Dale & Smith, 2012). Open boundaries allow outside situations and sources to influence it, it may even welcome it. Closed boundaries are when members have isolated themselves from the environment and the family is self-sufficient. It seems that the Laurent family is not open or closed, the family is self-sufficient and works hard. Both Andre and Marie left their country and family behind for a better life in America. However, when the family started having troubles with Michel they reached out to outside sources for information, information to make a better life for both Michel and the family as a whole. The social systems that the Laurent family has too lean on is quite large. After the earthquake Marie frantically waited to hear from her family, it wasn’t until she heard from familyfriends that her family was killed in the earthquake. She lost everyone but one nephew that she barely knew that day, she reached out to her priest that helped her get her nephew to the states to live with them. It wasn’t long that the family realized that there was trouble with Michel, Michel’s trauma from losing the only family he knew left him with emotional and psychiatric problems. After the school trying to handle Michel within the school, they reached out to the parents. When the situation got worse the school reached out to the mobile crisis team that worksfor the ‘child and adolescent inpatient psychiatric team unit’ of the local hospital. The hospital decided that it was better that Michel stay for further evaluation. 3
FAMILY SYSTEMSBoston has one of the largest Haitian population in the states and in the Haitian country, this gave the family more resources than those of other cities. Because of this the hospital that Michel was located belongs to a behavioral health team of Haitian speaking professionals (LeCroy, 2014). At the hospital Michel was seen by Dr. Jean-Baptist, she prescribed him meds that are appropriate for a youth with post-traumatic stress.
