Given name in the Americas “Gustavus Vassa”. ● Lord Dunmore and his Proclamation- (Year 1775) Last royal governor of Virginia who issued a proclamation which promised freedom for any enslaved black or indentured servant (men only) in Virginia who joined the British army. ● Ottobah Cugoano- A fanti free boy, enslaved in granada. A companion to a king’s son. Kidnapped to a factory on the gold coast . HIs journey was documented by his own a utobiography. ● Crispus Attucks- (He was african, Native and white) f irst person killed in the Boston Massacre, considered first casualty of the American Revolution. Where a fugitive ma n who had lived for years as a free man, was the first to die in early fight between pat riots and british militia. ● Ethiopian Regiment- Name of Military unit of runaway freed slaves under Lord Dunm ore that would fight for British ○ In 1775 he passed a law that allowed slaves freedom if they fought with the B ritish ● Gabriel Prosser- Deeply religious man who planned a massive slave rebellion in cen ter of slave world in Richmond, Virginia in the year 1800 . A day before the planned assault, there was a summer downpour that washed out bridges. He was betrayed by local authorities and his plan foiled, he was later hanged. ● Haitian Revolution- (1791-1803) ○ Uprising, which in 1790 resulted in the first black government in the Western Hemisphere. The US was reluctant to give full support to this republic led by f ormer slaves. Only successful slave revolt in history.
○ Anti-slave/anti-colonial revolution by self-liberated slaves against French colo nial rule in Saint-Domingue (modern day Haiti) in Aug 1791. Only slave uprisin g leading to foundation of a state which was free from slavery + ruled by non- whites and former captives. Revolution followed by successful defense of won freedoms; later collaboration with mulattos led to independence from white Europeans. Widespread effects on institution of slavery throughout Americas.
