4. What were the five things that we analyzed in the second part of the lab? The pure fluorene, the impurity (ethyl 4- amino benzoate, benzoic acid, succinimide, fluorene, the original mixture of fluorene containing the contaminant, the crude impure mixture before recrystallization, and the pure sample after recrystallization. Though succinimide was not actually used because it doesn’t don’t show up with the staining under the UV lighting. 5. What were used as the TLC plates? What did the silica do? Aluminum-backed plates with silica gel mixed with a small amount of fluorescent indicator coated on the back. The indicator allows the compounds that absorb ultraviolet light to be visible. The silica on the plates is slightly polar, so when a polar molecule is put on the plate, interactions occur. 6. What did the plates look like for each different impurity? (For Benzoic Acid, ask the class for their results)

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
