Rudolf believed that these early white patron appearances at the cabarets marked the “time when white people went to Negro cabarets to see how Negroes acted” (Fisher 64). Over the years these ‘appearances’ turned into a virtual white takeover. Upon return to Harlem after a five year hiatus, Fisher discovered that what was previously a list of black cabarets had sure enough become primarily white. The merging of black nightclubs started to take a noticeable affect on the development of Harlem

Negro culture. This intrusion of white people into black culture likely inspired Negro artists to form a new identity and surely influenced the development of Harlem jazz. Fisher’s cabaret years began right after the end of the first world war. The men had recently returned from the fighting grounds and cabarets were more popular than ever. It was a place where Negroes could gather together to rejoice in the music and dancing these clubs had to offer.
