Response 2 Aleli, Great discussion post. I recently saw a post online about a mother who placed her overweight 10-year-old daughter on a diet plan, made her get on a scale every morning and look at herself in the mirror daily. This story really broke my heart because I believe that parents should know better, and even when they don’t have this knowledge, they should research healthy ways to help their children attain and maintain a healthy weight. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2018), children should not be placed on a weight reduction diet without the consultation of a health care provider and if they are, diet reduction must be done with the aim of reducing the rate of weight gain while allowing normal growth and development. Strategies to help your child maintain a healthy weight include balancing caloric intake with calories burned through physical activity and normal growth, utilizing resources like ‘choosemyplate’ to plan meals, and encouraging physical activity (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018).
