6TRANSLATIONAL RESEARCH FOR PRACTICEEvidence SummaryAnalysis of five evidence based researches give insight that patient appointmentreminders do improve appointment attendance and patient satisfaction. Each article expands indetail how nonattendance can cause financial burden to a healthcare facility and inefficiency inthe healthcare delivery system. Utilization of today’s technology for appointment reminders, viatext message, email, and/or auto dialers, show promising improvement of patients engagement oftheir own healthcare. Thus, improving the delivery of healthcare to patients. Boksmati, Butler-Henderson, Anderson and Sahama (2016) systematically reviewedpublished studies between 2005 and 2015 that compared the attendance rates of patientsreceiving SMS reminders compared to patients not receiving a reminder. Twenty eight articleswere reviewed for similar information to the study design, sample size, population demographicsand intervention methods. Studies were from several different countries and healthcare settingswith seventy five percent using SMS appointment reminders, with a generic message, sent withinforty eight hours prior to an appointment. Two studies included did cost analysis of using SMStechnology for appointment reminders.
