Quite common among sexually active university aged individuals. Women more likely, but men and women reported being sexual compliant on at least one occasion - Motives for sexual compliance are based on relationship factors such as wanting to make one’s partner happy, promoting intimacy, and avoiding relationship conflict - Sexual compliance resulting from these may from positive consequences, leading to more sexual satisfaction, greater feelings of closeness and greater sense of fun in the relationship - More sexual compliance in relationships than causal interactions and women who endorse more traditional gender norms Varieties of Sexual Behaviour - Traditional sexual script: sequence of sexual behaviours that constitute “having sex” - TTS: kissing, sexual touching, and intercourse, likely followed by orgasm This TTS is an example of a cultural-level social script – reflected in popular films and novels Many students would include oral sex in this sequence of sexual activities - Sexual behaviours are much more variable than the TSS would suggest - Scripts exists at two additional levels The interpersonal/intrapsychic level or individual level: reflect the cultural level TSS but also incorporate variations as result of the diversity of the individual and situational factors involved The individual level: may also reflect widespread changes in attitudes towards sex - NA are engaging in sexual practices that are increasingly varied/flexible – good for a mutually satisfying sexual script. Also help to overcome some of the common complaints about the TSS, such as focus on intercourse and orgasm as a way to achieve sexual satisfaction/functioning
Solitary Sexual Behaviours Fantasy - Fantasizing about sex is common among most individuals, either along/during sexual activity - Sexual fantasies: extremely diverse in content and can include taboo subjects - Common sexual fantasies: making love outdoors, engaging in submissive or dominance acts, or observing someone undress - Women favorite fantasy was arousing locations while men referred to “voyeuristic” details - Having sexual fantasy does not mean someone wants to act on it in real life - People fantasize more frequently about people or bodies of their preferred gender - Religiosity can influence sexual fantasies: paranormal beliefs and spirituality related to greater frequency of sexual fantasy and fantasizing about sex for women and were negatively related to sadistic fantasies for men In contrast, intrinsic religiosity and fundamentalism were negatively related to frequency of sexual fantasy - Can also be shaped by physiological factors: ovulation phase, more frequent and more arousing sexual fantasy. Fantasy becomes more “nurturant” and less sexually explicit - Deliberately engaging in sexual fantasy, increases testosterone in women - Some women who experience a loss of interest in sex deliberately engage in sexual thoughts/fantasy, which is beneficial Masturbation - Can engage in alone or with a partner - Good way to learn about ones own sexual response - Common behaviour in people of all ages. Children as young as two or three often
