Microsoft’s Portfolio Management Plan 8 to continuously evolve and adapt as quickly as possible in order for them to keep up with the pace of the changing environment. A major challenge Microsoft faces in this digital age is cybersecurity. In 2018, millions of businesses and consumers were affected by the biggest cyber threats in history. It is predicted that globally, the annual cybercrime cost will grow to about $6 trillion by 2021. The most common attacks have been data destruction/damage, stolen money, embezzlement, fraud, loss of productivity, personal and financial theft. In an attempt to combat this, Microsoft is continuously innovating their products, so that they can provide end to end security to their customers. Microsoft is also attempting to get the government to do more in order to make the internet safe (2017 Annual Revenue Report). Microsoft joined the Cybersecurity Tech Accord pledge whose principles are to protect all of their users and customers everywhere, oppose cyberattacks on innocent citizens and enterprises from anywhere, empower users, customers and developers to strengthen cybersecurity protection and to partner with each other as well as like-minded groups to enhance cybersecurity. Microsoft has also created an account guard initiative that covers organizational and personal email accounts from threat notification across accounts, security guidance and ongoing education, and early adopter opportunities. They have also launched the Microsoft Defending Democracy program that focuses on protecting campaigns from hacking, protecting voting and the electoral process, increasing political advertising transparency and defending against disinformation campaigns (2017 Annual Revenue Report). Microsoft is also investing in tools for detecting and addressing security breaches. “Microsoft wants to instill trust in technology in all that they do by advocating for customer privacy, and industry wide cyber security initiatives (2017 Annual Revenue Report).”
