3. The republicans quickly gained supporters in the North. In 1860 most southern slave states were publicly threatening secession. This was the second largest party which allowed them to have some major power which a cause for the civil war. Lincoln became first republican president and south carolina was the first to secede because they knew with a Republican in office committed to end the spread of slavery it would only be a matter of time slavery was abolished....Slave states will be outnumbered in the Senate and unable to block an abolition bill.
Bleeding Kansas1.Caused by the Kansas-Nebraska Act and popular sovereignty. Series of violent and political confrontations in Kansas between those who believed in a free state and those who wanted Kansas to be admitted as a slave state. Border ruffers are people from Missouri who rush into Kansas to vote bc of popular sovereignty. ‘Civil war in Kansas’ ‘Bloody Kansas’ ‘Border War’2.1855 - 1861 Kansas, USA (Context needed!!!)3.Leads to the caning of Sumner, shows the problems with popular sovereignty, because both proslavery and antislavery people wanted control over Kansas The dispute further strained the relations of the North and South, making civil war seem imminent.Increased tension and mistrustWhen the Lecompton Constitution (Pro-slavery constitution) is rejected by Congress it increases the mistrust of the south….another“broken promise” The Caning of Sumner on the Senate floorKansas does not become a state until after the Civil War startsThe dispute further strained the relations of the North and South, making civil war imminent.Time 1854-1861 (fighting intermittent…prelude to Civil War)
Caning of Sumner1.Due to the events of Bleeding Kansas, Senator Charles Sumner made an abolitionist speech insulting South Carolina Senator Andrew Butler (The Crime Against Kansas Speech). Preston Brooks (Butler’s nephew) heard Sumner’s speech and beat Sumner into a coma with his cane.(The beating stopped when the cane Brooks was using broke in two)2.1856 around bleeding kansas3.This escalated tensions between the north and the south. North saw the south as uncivilized because he was hitting a defenseless person while the south saw it as defending the pride of the south (Cavalier Image). We know the south supported this because Brooks received 200 canes from other southerners Shows that the ability to compromise will be nearly impossible to continue as it is clear the two regions have different values . Mistrust and tension mounts as sectional differences become ever more apparent.
Lecompton Constitution1.Pro-slavery constitution written for Kansas’s admission to the Union as a slave state in opposition to the Topeka Constitution; the pro-slavery document was overwhelmingly rejected by Kansas settlers. Buchanan wanted the constitution to be approved but the House solidly rejected it.
