American Bandstand that aired from 1952 to 1989. The celebrities would dance the twist and later the adults also joined in on the trend. I think the song is nice and has a great beat to dance to and if I were to be a teenager in the 1950s this would be my jam. There are 2 versions of the song Hound Dog that we listened to in this class. The first version of Hound Dog we listened to was by Elvis Presley , it is a 12-bar blue. Elvis was the king of rock and roll, and the style of music that he uses is rockabilly, this is the combination of rock and hillbilly. Tapes started in the late 1940s but actually began to be used in the 1950s. Les Paul created a method of layering tape that was called over dubbing and it is used in this song with the claps and voices that are in the background of the guitar solo. The other version we listened to was Hound Dog by Big Mama Thornton , which is the original. Big Mama Thornton’s version of the song had hokum lyrics, which are lyrics that mean one thing to one person and something different to someone else. An example of hokum lyrics is “You can wag your tail but I ain't gonna feed you no more”, this implies that no matter how much he wants to have sex shes not going to give him any anymore. Presley did not copy Big Mama Thornton’s version of Hound Dog, he heard it from another band that made the song about an actual hound dog and he covered that version of the song. I liked Presley’s version of hound dog because it had a catchy beat that made it nice to listen to, and I also like Presley’s voice better. In the song Summertime Blues by Eddie Cochran is a song about a teenager that wants to have a summer vacation but has to work. Eddie Cochran was only 21 years old when he died, but he had an interesting twist on music. The song has a call and response by incorporating an overdub of adults talking not singing their responses back to Eddie Cochran. The song also incorporates Rockabilly style, which is the oldest style of rock and roll. Overdubbing lyrics, is a technique that makes you add more sound to a recording that has already been taped. There is an interesting instrumental break used after the end of each verse that attracts attention to the lyrics. The lyrics are about Eddie Cochran not being able to have a summer break because he needs to work and no matter who he asks no one can seem to help him with his problem. This song overall was aiming towards the teenagers (Since the teenage market was blowing big) so Cohren made something for them to dance too but also something they can relate. This song was nice, I liked it because it was different by sounding like a conversation. Chapter 3

There are two versions of this song that we have listened to in this class. The version of Tutti Frutti by Little Richard is a 12-bar blues. This song was used as a model for rock and roll music due to the style that Little Richard incorporated into it. Little Richard gave the song more of a jazzy feeling. It was mainly appealing to the teenage audience because teens liked songs with strange words.
