Action plans are how school counselors efficiently

This preview shows page 7 - 9 out of 10 pages.

Action plans are how school counselors efficiently and effectively deliver the school counseling program. There are three types of action plans – curriculum action plan, small-group action plan, and closing-the-gap action plan. The curriculum action plan is used to increase student achievement and improve student attitudes and behaviors by delivering the school counseling curriculum through activities. These school counseling curriculum activities are presented through classroom and group activities. (American School Counselor Association, 2012). Small-group action plans provide the organization and focus for the academic, attendance, and behavioral goals of small-group counseling. These plans implement short-term intervention and involve four to eight sessions to meet specific intervention or prevention goals. Closing-the-gap action plan is designed to address behavioral or academic discrepancies between groups of students. All action plans follow a format – design, documentation, and implementation (American School Counselor Association, 2012). 5) Student discusses the purpose of annual, monthly, and weekly school counselor calendar and attaches a sample of a one-month (any month) calendar depicting the roles and functions of the school counselor. School counselors utilize calendars to organize what they must do and when and notify students, parents, teachers, and administrators about upcoming events. Annual calendars are used to identify and communicate any school counseling program priorities. They increase the visibility of the school counseling program and provide information on activities or events that the students, parents, or staff might find valuable. Monthly calendars can be used to remind students, parents, teachers, and administrators about events that are coming up. Calendars should be posted in places such as the school’s website, administrative office, career center, classroom bulletin boards, and any other areas used to communicate school events.
Weekly calendars provide detailed plans of what the school counselor must do. This plan is flexible and provides a plan for program implementation on a daily basis (American School Counselor Association, 2012). 6) Student summarizes how the management system answers the “when, why, who, and on what authority” a comprehensive school counseling program is implemented. The management system answers the question “when, why, who, and on what authority” in the comprehensive school counseling program. “When” because the school counselor utilizes calendars to organize and manage their time and use of time assessments to determine where their efforts are going. “Why” because school counselors use data to help them understand why students may be under-achieving. “Who” because the school counselor has an advisory team that is a representative group of stakeholders that review and advises on the school counseling program. “On what authority” is the annual agreement; without this agreement, the school counselor would not have the authority to implement the school counseling program.
