Summary 6:25-6:38 In this lesson, we talked about system updates. We reviewed the importance of keeping systems updated. We looked at updating the Windows operating system along with Microsoft applications. We also talked about updating device drivers, third-party applications, and the firmware on hardware devices. Using Windows Update 0:00-0:12 In this demonstration, we're going to talk about configuring Windows update. As you know, the Windows operating system periodically goes out to Microsoft's site, over the Internet, and checks to see if there are any updates available for the operating system. Managing Updates Availability 0:13-2:54 You can manage these updates and the way they're installed, in Control Panel. I'm going to come down here, right-click on my Windows icon, and click on Control Panel. We'll go to System and Security, and then go to Windows update. Now this area right here, indicates, what updates are currently available. Notice that I have a lot of updates currently available for this system. It's a fairly new system. I just recently installed this system, and so all of the updates that have been released between the time that my installation disk was created, and now, are in the process of being laid down on this system. It's taking a little while because they're all out of updates. So I have 150 important updatescurrently available for this system, and five optional updates available for this system. Down here it tells me when the most recent check for updates was, and you can see that the most recent check for updates occurred at 2:18 pm, and the last time updates were installed was today at 1:47 pm. Using this information we're pretty confident that the list of available updates right here is current. However, if the last check for updates was quite some time ago, you could come over here and use this option, Check for Updates, to force Windows Update to go out and check for any new updates now. So with that, let's take a look at what updates are currently available. To do, this I can click either of these two links. Let's click on this link right here to see our important updates. Here's the list of all of the important updates that are currently available for installation on this system. Notice that because these are important updates, they're selected by default. They're turned on. We can also view optional updates by clicking Optional over here. Notice that because they are optional, they are not selected by default. If I want to include these optional updates, with the important updates during the update process, all I have to do is add a check mark to each of the ones that I want to install. It's usually a really good idea to include these optional updates along with the important ones.

Notice that if I select an update over here in the middle pane, detailed information about that update is displayed over here on the right. We have the name of the update here, and then we have a description of what this update is. What problems does it fix? If we read this, we learn that this update contains updated definition files used by Windows Defender to detect malware. We also see when this update was published. This is a brand

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
