Resolution: number of pixels displayed on the screen Wide-screen vs. normal screen o Pixels (or picture elements): tiny dots that compose a picture The higher the resolution, the closer together the dots o Color depth refers to the number of different colors a monitor displays at one time o Image quality affected by resolution and color depth (bit depth) The system unit o Case that contains electronic components of the computer used to process data Motherboard o Main circuit board in system unit o Contains adapter cards, processor chips, and memory chips

Chips o Small piece of semi-conducting material on which integrated circuits are etched Integrated circuits contain many microscopic pathways capable of carrying electrical current o Chips are packaged so they can be attached to a circuit board o Most important chip is the Central Processing Unit (CPU) Integrated circuits o Increased variability o Smaller size o Higher speed o Higher efficiency o Lower cost Processor (CPU) o Interprets and carries out basic instructions that operates a computer Control unit directs and coordinates operations in computer Arithmetic logic unit (ALU) performs arithmetic, comparison, and logical operations o On a PC, called microprocessor o Computer’s brain RAM – Random Access Memory o Temporary holding area for data, application program instructions, and the operating system Memory o Resides on small circuit board called memory module o Memory slots on motherboard hold memory modules
