may turn the other cheek because that is how we grew up thinking. For the villagers in the story every year they commit a violent murder yet they never truly understand or know where the lotteries origin came from or why yet they keep doing it because it is tradition. If the villagers had thought about what they were doing and why they were about to kill someone because of a tradition it may have been stopped but they didn't. The same thing continues for us as well. We have all kinds of traditions yet so many of us just do it because it is tradition not because of what it means or where it came from or why anyone did it to begin with.
