1. Be able to describe the difference between parasitism, mutualism, and commensalism. Parasitism—a relationship in which one species benefits, but the other species (the host) is harmed. Mutualism—a type of symbiosis in which both species benefit from the interaction. Commensalism—one species benefits and the other is neither benefited nor harmed. 2. Know the difference between an ectoparasite and an endoparasite and be able to give examples of both. Ectoparasites live on the surface of the host and may have several primary hosts during their adult life. They either suck fluids from the host or feed on its skin. Thus the leech feeds on the blood of vertebrae animals, and some parasitic roundworms suck the juice of plants. Usually have many primary hosts in their lifetime. Since they move from host to host, the probably transmit disease. (mosquito, leech, etc.) Endoparasites spend their adult lives inside of a host and may have complex life cycles. (flukes, tapeworms, etc.) 3.Use a fluke to describe the life cycle of an endoparasite that has two intermediate hosts in its life cycle; what is the difference between a primaryhost and an intermediate host? 4.Know which endoparasites cause malaria and African sleeping sickness; how are they transmitted to humans and where within the human body do they live?
