This form of treatment helps to develop the skills needed to stop drinking, help the user to build a strong social support system, set attainable goals, learn to cope with or avoid the possible triggers that may contribute to relapse (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2014). Different types of behavioral treatment include cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, interventions, and marital and/or family counseling. In addition to the afore mentioned treatment options there is also mutual support groups that have been proven effective in the treatment of alcohol abuse. This treatment option includes 12-step programs such as group meeting like Alcoholics Anonymous. Studies have shown that those that have attended support groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, were more likely to be abstinent and free of alcohol dependence symptoms than those that did not attend support group meetings, showing that for some attending support groups alone can serve as “an effective intervention for AUDS” (Kelly & Yeterian, n.d.).
