March 2017 Repetition Is the Sincerest Form of Flattery After winning eight distinct Deal of the Year awards in 2016 for their industry-leading Project Finance work in Latin America, Clifford Chance’s US lawyers were honored again when they won IJ Global’s top award for Latin America Roads work, which recognized the Autopista Pacifico Tres project in Colombia. Continuing its strong work in this area, in June 2017 Clifford Chance advised Citigroup Global Markets Inc. in the structuring of an innovative US$350.75 million dual offering of international and local project bonds by Autopistas del Sol, S.A.—the only project of its kind in Costa Rica and the first offering of project bonds out of a non-investment grade Central American country, making it a milestone deal in the Latin American market overall. GETTING HIRED Vault’s Verdict: As a firm with 31 of its 33 offices abroad, it’s no surprise that Clifford Chance looks for candidates with an interest in developing an international practice. A resume that includes past business experience is also helpful; most associates have some real-world experience before law school. Hiring Process • “The firm is looking to hire engaged, commercially aware, interested young attorneys with records of achievement from competitive schools. Some international familiarity is a plus (work or school experience, even travel), though is not a pre- requisite.” • “We obviously consider the law school a person attended, as well as the grades that person received at that school. However, I would say personality is one of the biggest factors we consider: if you’re going to be working long hours, you want to be working with someone who you can get along with.” • “We are primarily a T14 firm. People arrive from other schools, such as Fordham and GW, but it’s becoming less common. Clerkships are highly valued, but we don’t actively seek out former clerks. The upside of that practice is that the clerks we do have get more work that takes advantage of their skills. Fit and maturity are extremely important to us, as well as the ability to work with an international office and clientele. Language skills are highly valued.
