Each waste generating unit assigns a primary and alternate member to control the operation and process of the shop’s waste generated and contacts the Environmental Office when a waste such as a 55-gal drum of used oil is ready for pickup. The Environmental Office then schedules a pick-up with the bases Dangerous Waste Accumulation Area (DWAA), which is set-up to store larger quantities of DW before it picked-up and moved off-site by the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office (DRMO) for proper disposal. All WMD generators maintain physical custody of all dangerous wastes until DRMO arrives from Joint-Base Lewis McChord on-site to remove them. WMD personnel never self-transports dangerous waste to their support maintenance facility for subsequent turn-in to DRMO ("Dangerous Waste Management Plan," 2012).Hazardous Waste LandfillA HW landfill is constructed to store HW for many decades in an underground site safely.It contains special liners to assist in preventing the HW from leaking into the soil. Hazardous landfills are comprised of separate compartments to divide and separate different waste materialsdepending on their chemistry, type and reactivity with each other. Generally, HW sites contain additional buildings on site, such as a wastewater treatment plant, monitoring wells, and water capture structures (Arizona University, n.d.). Since clay is considered a natural barrier slowing down and stops the leaking of leachate. In addition to the clay barrier, a double geomembrane liner is used as a guard. Allowing a drainage system to be placed above each liner to capture the waste streams. The on-site treatment plant cleans-up the collected leachate to prevent the release of hazardous substances. HW landfills have a waterproof top layer to minimize exposure on the surface of the facility, prevent waste movement, and restrict surface water infiltration into the landfill (Arizona University, n.d.).CERCLA ProgressCERCLA or Superfund was designed in 1980 to identify sites where hazardous waste hascreated an environmental and or public health risk as a result of leakage, spillage, or general mismanagement and to identify the responsible party.
