Records: collection of related data fields o Field: typically a name, number, or combination of characters that describes an aspect of a business object or activity Data entities, attributes, and keys o Key: field or set of fields in a record that is used to identify the record o Primary key: field or set of fields that uniquely identifies the record Relational databases o Focus on data fields and how they relate to one another o Connections between tables o MS-Access is an example Data and information o Qualities of valuable information: Accurate Verifiable Timely Organized Accessible Useful Cost-effective Maintaining data o What is validation? Process of comparing data with a set of rules to find out if data is correct Reduce data entry errors and enhance data integrity before program writes data on disk Terminology o Bricks-and-mortar business: company with a physical location o Clicks-and-mortar business: company with a physical and online presence o Dotcom business: online presence without physical location What is E-Commerce? o Financial business transaction that occurs over an electronic network
