TUBERCULOSIS (TB) CONTROL PLAN [ORGANIZATIONAL POLICY #8390]Pulmonary TB is a disease that is carried via air currents.Airborne Precautions are used to preventtransmission from suspected/known TB cases.All hospital personnel must complete the annual healthassessment and TB screening.Employee Health will determine if a TB test is required for each HCP basedon the individual risks identified through this screening process.Signs and symptoms of TB infection include:malaise, night sweats, weight loss, and persistent cough.Employees that enter rooms that house patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis must wear an N-95respirator mask.Fit Testing:23
Employees must be informed regarding the type of mask required for their job category and undergo “FitTesting” prior to caring for patients with TB or other infections requiring airborne precautions.TheEmployee Health Department/Ellis Works performs fit testing upon hire and as an annual requirement.INFLUENZA (FLU) PREVENTIONInfluenza is a contagious disease.It is caused by the influenza virus which spreads from person to personthrough coughing or sneezing.Influenza can lead to more serious health problems such as pneumonia, andkills about 36,000 people each year, mostly among the elderly. As a healthcare employee it is your moral andprofessional responsibility to get immunized annually against influenza.Beginning with the 2020-2021 influenza season, HCP at Ellis Medicine will be required to receive an annualinfluenza vaccination unless they have a medical or religious exemption.1.Receive the flu vaccine from Ellis Works or provide proof of having received the vaccine fromanother provider.2.Provide aNYS Influenza Vaccine Medical Exemption Statement for Healthcare Personnelor submit aReligious Exemption Form and complete the associated requirements. A primary care provider mustdocument that the flu vaccine will negatively impact your health. The exemption statement isavailable on the Intranet.3.Submit a Religious Exemption Request Form, complete the assigned Influenza VaccinationHealthstream course and submit the course of completion certificate to Ellis Works.4. Health careworkers who are not immunized with influenza vaccine must wear a surgical mask in all areas wherepatients are likely to be present.The impact of an Influenza Outbreak at Ellis Medicine would be significant and could include:Increased risk to employees, increased patient length of stay and mortality, closing of patient units whichwould result in loss of services to the community as well as loss of income for the hospitalFlu Symptoms include:Fever, body aches, Extreme tiredness and dry cough, Sore throat, ChillsTransmission-based Precautions:Patients with the flu are placed on Droplet precautions.
