Kant on o What separates us from animals is that we have long term goals and can do things to achieve those goals, like regulate behavior and planning for future Mappes on sexual morality 3 main points - deception, coercion, exploitation o Humanity formula: always act so that you treat humanity , whether in yourself or in another person, as an end-in-itself , and never as a mere means o End-in-itself vs. mere means : end-in-itself sees someone as being able to find their own end whereas seeing them as a means is tampering with their thoughts to bring them to your end o Voluntary informed consent: giving someone all of the information that they need to allow them to set their own ends and make their own sound decisions; they are a means but not a MERE means Respectful of the fact that they have their own ends and desires Deception - takes away INFORMED aspect Lying about self for sex: STDs, love, marriage, sexuality, birth control, marital status, being monogamous/fidelity, social status Sex is good for people (makes their lives better, brings relationships closer together, etc.) Homosexuality may not be so bad, possibly should allow it (morally permissable) Corvino on homosexuality Homosexuality is morally permissable. o Arguments against conclusion : Homosexuality is harmful and so wrong. Homosexuality is unnatura l and so wrong. Homosexuality violates biblical teaching. PIB argument (polygamy, incest, bestiality) o Arguments against the arguments against: Unnatural - unusual OR non-innate desires OR not found in nature OR organs used improperly OR disgusting Unusual : just because most people don't do it doesn’t make it wrong Not found in nature : animals don’t do things that we do in nature; many species have homosexual pairings/relationships Non-innateness : Organs used improperly: multiple purposes for organs, heterosexual people who can't procreate are still allowed to have sex
