Allergic contact dermatitis is an inflammatory response confined to the skin that is initiated by exposure to an allergen to which a person had previously been sensitized (Porth). The affected area becomes swollen and warm with exudation swelling, crusting and development of secondary infection (Porth). Diagnosis of contact dermatitis is made by observing the lesions and comparing it to a pattern of exposure to the possible allergen. Patch test can be used to confirm suspicion.
