who I am, I feel that I’m more at peace with myself and the way things have turned out for me.
Briefly summarize your thoughts on Rogers’s major concepts of the self, self-actualization,
and unconditional positive regard.
According to Rogers, people want to feel, experience and behave in ways which are consistent
with our self and our ideal-self.
The closer our self and ideal self are to each other, the more
congruent we are. Rogers felt the person is self-actualizing and that for a person to achieve self-
actualization they must be in a state of congruence. The development of congruence is dependent
on unconditional positive regard. However, in searching for unconditional positive regard, we
may lose touch with our true self.
What research design(s) did Rogers use in his studies?
Most of Rogers work was conducted using the Q-sort technique.
Do you think Rogers conducted his research ethically? Why or why not?
I do believe Rogers conducted his research ethically. He was integral in helping develop research
methods that were objective and reliable. He devised ways to collect data that would help to
reduce, if not eliminate, personal bias. He made recordings of his therapeutic sessions available
to others so that his methods and reports could be verified.
