role.” In his speech, FDR backs up his targeting of the banks by stating a summary of their wrong doings. His supporting material was a statement of publicly known failures and negative actions the banks had been guilty of. He was quoted as saying, “Faced by failure of credit they have proposed only the lending of more money. Stripped of the lure of profit by which to induce our people to follow their false leadership, they have resorted to exhortations, pleading tearfully for restored confidence.” Using this supporting material and observing inductive reasoning solidified Mr. Roosevelt’s claim that the banks were at fault. The next speech we reviewed, spoken by John F. Kennedy on January 20 th , 1961 has been called one of the best inaugural speeches delivered by a President Elect. According to E. B. Kenny, author of Another Look at Kennedy’s Inaugural Address, “This inaugural address was
delivered in the aftermath of a very heated campaign and close election. The election campaign [of] [1960] was a bitter one. A chief criticism leveled at the newly elected president during his campaign had been his youth and inexperience.” Knowing the criticism he faced, I’m sure, lead JFK to prepare such a well performed and clearly defined speech that still remains one of the most well-known. In Kennedy’s speech, you will find that the specific purpose is to speak to the citizens about foreign policy. At the time he was elected, there was an ongoing conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States, so the route he took was the most appropriate when calculating in what the citizens were facing at the time and what caused the most stress to society at this juncture. Many other Presidents had spoken of foreign policy during inauguration, but as stated by writer of John F. Kennedy in the Tradition of Inaugural Speeches who wrote, “In 1953, 36% of Eisenhower’s first inaugural assertions were about international issues. Kennedy confirmed this trend with the figure of 44%... Kennedy’s figure of 4% for domestic issues provides an unusually sharp de-emphasis.” Kennedy claimed that it was up to the citizens of America to work together to bring the country and the world to a better place of peace. He can be stated as saying, “In your hands, my fellow citizens, more than mine, will rest the final success or failure of our course. Since this country was founded, each generation of Americans has been summoned to give testimony to its national loyalty. The graves of young Americans who answered the call to service surround the globe.” Using inductive reasoning with the statements of past Americans being the ones to answer the call to action would properly convince citizens that his statements were true and fact.
Finally, the speech delivered by President Barack Obama in 2009 was seen by many since it was the first time an African American had been voted into the presidency by the American public. It was a historical day where thousands upon thousands of people attended, just to hear his word and promises for our country. For this speech, I take away two specific purposes. The first being to express to the public what will be done about the economic situation
