In order to narrow the field of suitable career choices, career counselors administer interest inventory tests to better understand the type of work environment is best for the client. Interest inventories measure the interest in various types of activities and then relate those activities to ones required in various careers. For example, some people like to work with objects (manipulate things, use tools…) and other prefer to work with people (counseling, negotiating, helping…) the interest inventory identifies those patterns and then matches the person with jobs that fit their interest profile. The Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII) and the Occupational Interests Inventory (OII) are two common interest inventories used in career counseling. Nonverbal communication is considered a [less/more] distorted form of communication. Less Because people send nonverbal signals automatically and without conscious thought the message conveyed by the body is usually more accurate than words. We are socialized to say and do the “right” things but our body language often betrays our true feelings.

Nonverbal behaviors need to be interpreted within the context they arise. The same behavior in two different situations can mean very different things. Therefore the context of the situation must be considered before trying to evaluate what the person was actually saying, thinking, or feeling. Example: Crossed arms is generally interpreted as closing off and disengaging from a conversation or person, but if the environment is cold the person may be crossing his or her arms to keep warm. Nonverbal communication can be sent through four different modes of behavior. Nonverbal communication can be sent through the use of time, the body, the voice, and the environment. Failing to recognize another person’s presence is an example of nonverbal communication expressed through the use of time. By failing to recognize a person or respond to comments in a prompt manner conveys many things such as a lack of interest or hostility or ambivalence. On the other hand eager responses or quick acknowledgement generally means the person is listening, interested and attentive.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
