The state allows nurse practitioners to practice to the fullest extent within his or her
educational preparation and certification scope of practice. Washington is among the states in the
union that allows the independent practice to nurse practitioner including prescriptive authority.
However, Washington state law requires that NPs must complete 30 hours of continuing
education for licensure renewal in addition to 15 hours continuing education for prescriptive
authority as defined in WAC 246-840-302.
Also, the state law NPs to have 250 hours of clinical

practice renewal hours that must be obtained within two years renewal cycle (Alleman & Houle,
2013).
