We do not attend to the same things when we think about life and when we actually live Money doesn’t buy you experiential happiness, but lack of money certainly buys you misery Memory Memory is a single term that reflects a number of different abilities o Working memory – holding information briefly while working w/ it o Episodic memory – remembering episodes of one’s life o Autobiographical memory – memory for events of one’s life o Semantic memory – general knowledge of facts of the world o Collective memory – memory that people in a group share like family, school, communtiy Key to improving memory is to improve processes of encoding and use techniques for effective retrieval o Key to good retrieval is developing effective cues that will remind you of encoded info Remembering episodes involves 3 processes o (1) Encoding – initial learning of info (2) Storing – maintaining info (3) Retrieving – accessing info 3 stages are not discrete but depend on one another

o There are 2 errors that can happen during the process of remembering something (1) Forgetting (2) Misremembering – false recall or false recognition There are important principles regarding encoding o (1) Selective – we attend to some events in our environment and we ignore others o (2) Prolific – we are always encoding events of our lives to understand it
