According to Freud, those who had
psychological problems were exhibiting their childhood repressedimpulses and trauma- His idea was that through psychoanalysis, he could understandthose unconscious, repressed feelings.- Psychodynamic therapy is shorter in duration, requires fewer visitsand is less costly than psychoanalysis.-Psychoanalytic therapists use six methodsused by Freud tounderstand the unconscious mind and figure out the repressedimpulses, conflicts, and memories6 Psychoanalytic ApproachesKey Ingredients:Free association=Through free association, the clientresting on a couch say whatever words come to mind withoutcensorship.Interpretation-Interpretation is related to forming hypotheses about theclient’s problems based on words said during free associationsand interpretations of dreams that provide explanations of theunconscious mind about repressed ideas, impulses, or wishes.- The therapists share the interpretations and hypotheses withthe client as they are building a trusting therapeutic relationship.Dream analysis=Freud believed the unconscious mind isprojected symbolically into dreams and influences theconscious life. Freud distinguished between manifest contentand the latent content of a dream.-Manifest= Manifest is the observable or part of the dream weremember-Latent= and latent is the hidden part or the meaning behindthe dream.- In dream analysis, therapists try to interpret the underlyingmeaning of dreams, analyzing the latent content from themanifest content.Resistance
-Resistance may develop as the client becomes aware of theirunconscious mind. Clients, therefore, want to avoidconfrontation and anxiety associated with repressed thoughts, emotions, and impulses that are revealed.- To minimize resistance, psychoanalysts try to make the clientaware that they are unconsciously blocking therapeutic efforts.
