MORE FISH “Now if plagiarism is an idea that makes sense only in the precincts of certain specialized practices and is not a normative philosophical notion, inquiries into its philosophical underpinnings are of no practical inter est or import… Everyday disciplinary practices do not rest on a foundation of philosophy or theory; they rest on a foundation of themselves; no theory or philosophy can either prop them up or topple them. As long as the practice is ongoing and flourishing its conventions will command respect and allegiance and flouting them will have negative consequences.” (NYT, 2010)

SELF-PLAGIARISM Jackson is too busy. He defends his Ph.D. thesis in two weeks, is applying for post-doctoral positions overseas, and is adjusting to life as a new father of twin sons. Many of the post- doctoral positions he is applying for require a newly composed and lengthy research proposal, which he is struggling to find time to compose. He hopes to extend some of his earlier research, done in his MPhil and PhD programmes, during his post-doctoral fellowship.

SELF-PLAGIARISM In fact, there is substantial overlap between some of the sections of his dissertation and thesis and the required sections for his post-doc proposal. Awake at 3am to tend to his children, and fearing the uncompleted applications due today, Jackson decides he should copy and paste the problem statement, literature review, and data and methods sections from his thesis into his new post-doc proposal. He has already written these and, in fact, some of this material is used in a forthcoming article. The article is not out yet, his thesis is not published, and he figures no one will know if he simply copies and pastes these sections.

“SELF-PLAGIARISM” IS A MISNOMER That doesn’t mean it’s ok, morally acceptable! Distortion of the research record. A misrepresentation; a deliberate conveyance of a falsehood.

CASE A: SOMEONE ELSE’S INSIGHT Pak is considering plagiarizing one small section of his dissertation on ancient Chinese history. The section in question involves an interpretative insight due entirely to his friend, Ka Ho, who, up until last month, was a fellow postgraduate student in the same program as Pak. Ka Ho has dropped out of his studies and has taken a lucrative job at a bank. When Ka Ho dropped out, he offered to let Pak use anything in his draft dissertation, without citing him or making any other attribution.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
