the speaking roles in the movie are mostly robotic and not true speaking. Even without sound, Charlie Chapman makes these scenes captivating enough for the audience to want to watch more of what is going to happen to this poor tramp. After chapman gets out of the mental hospital, he finds himself accidentally leading a communist parade. With Chapman’s character so naive, innocent, and just plain goofy, the audience can’t help but to laugh at this misfortunate incident he gets himself into which turns into him going to prison. One of my favorite scenes besides when Chapman sings his nonsensical song because the lyrics written on his cuffs literally fly

off his arms was the scene where Chapman goes on a coke rage and ends up stopping a jail break out. Even though the movie had no talking, it had screens of words that would appear at rather appropriate and funny times, to let you know what the actors were saying. When Chapman is told he is free from jail, a screen pops up where Chapman asks if he can stay a little longer because he is so happy in jail. The policeman laughs him out and the audience is roaring, for who would want to stay in jail? Chapman goes through several different scenes trying to get back into jail, while also falling in love with a witty girl who is flat broke. My all-time favorite scene is when
