outside of structures as opposed to inside. I like the colors the white stone voussoirs that are set alternately against the red brick voussoirs are so cool and so unique. From the reading, I saw the stacked arches of the Roman aqueducts have been suggested as inspiration for the super imposed arches. It is funny that when I saw them for the first time that is exactly what I thought as well, but the reading goes on to say that “their treatment here is entirely original”. 3. What is an Iwan and how is it typically used in a mosque? An Iwan is a vaulted or domed volume, according to the reading, it has walls on 3 of its sides and the other side is open. It is usually a rectangular hall or space. I think Iwan’s are beautiful and I like how the colors can put people at ease in the lecture you talked about using blue instead of red. However, Iwan’s are just fancy entrances to the mosque, either from the outside world or from the courtyard (a.k.a. sahn). I think maybe they wanted the people going into the mosque to be in awe of the Iwan, that way they knew that the religion was bigger than them. Kind of like the cathedrals did in Christianity.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
