In pairs or small groups students will be responsible for selecting, thoroughly preparing and presenting to the class various cultural aspects of one Spanish-speaking country (e.g. geographical, political, economic, historical, literary, linguistic, film, etc.). The topic will be selected in consultation with the instructor. It is highly recommended that the student use visual aids (Power Point, photos, posters, etc.), yet the visuals can only contain names of people and places. The approximate duration of this activity is 3-5 minutes per pair/group. More details regarding this assignment will be discussed throughout the semester. f) Role-Play : There will be one graded role-play activity over the course of the semester. During the role-play activity the student has to demonstrate his/her speaking skills and the ability to negotiate meaning in Spanish. The student will have the opportunity to prepare for this activity at home, but should be prepared to engage in negotiation of meaning and elementary conversation with the role-play partner. The role-play activity will be based on topics, vocabulary and grammar covered in-class. The approximate duration of this activity is 3-5 minutes per pair/group. This activity will be videotaped by the student. g) Interview: One face-to-face, one-on-one oral interview will be administered towards the end of the term to assess oral proficiency in Spanish. Students will have to describe a picture, giving details of the characters and the actions shown. They should also talk about different time frames. The student should demonstrate the ability to negotiate meaning by answering the questions the Professors will ask after the student’s mo nologue. h) Compositions: Over the course of the semester there will be two graded in-class compositions. The firs one will be a well-articulated paragraph (approximate 75 words), the second one will consist of a minimum of 3 paragraphs (approximately 150 words). The composition topics will be assigned by the instructor and the student must make sure that each composition includes topic appropriate vocabulary and grammar. Each composition has to be coherent and well-articulated with transitions and connectors adequate for this level. For both compositions the student might have to write a draft and a final version. The final version must i ncorporate the instructor’s feedback and abide by the formatting requirements listed in the miscellaneous section. i) Mi Diario/My Diary: There will be a minimum of six graded entries. Students will write in Spanish about their experiences learning the language, new abilities, difficulties, interactions with other Spanish speakers, as well as participation in cultural and community events. In order to receive full credit for this activity students must participate in at least one cultural event and submit an entry in Spanish describing it. You can choose from the options your professor shares with students, such as Spanish Club events, Meadows Museum lectures, Hispanic series, Community events, etc. Students might have to submit these entries on Blackboard.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
