At Grande Isle she becomes extremely close to Adele, but sometimes Adele’ s affectionate expressions confused and surprised Edna. She never really had any relationships in her childhood with others and wasn’t familiar with Creole’s loving ways. A few week s later, Madame Lebrun hosts a party for their guests. During the party, Mademoiselle Reisz plays music on the piano and amazes Edna. This was different because when she hears the music, no pictures are provoked by the emotions. Instead, she feels the emotion. Later in the evening, Edna remains out on the porch, and tells Leonce to go ahead and go to bed. This scene illustrates Edna’s newfound boldness that is growing in her. Still on Grande Isle, the guests of the Lebrun’s decide to go on a boat ride. While on the boat, Robert flirts with a young Mexican girl which upsets Edna. News is soon to come that Robert is departing from Grande Isle and is leaving for Mexico. The news highly upsets Edna as Robert never mentioned this decision to her. Edna starts to visit Madame Lebrun often to chat about Robert and hoping to receive a letter from him. Everyone in the town notices the change occurring in Edna and quickly recognizes her affection towards Robert. Leonce becomes worries about Edna and her behavior. He soon takes action by reaching out to Doctor Mandelet for help. After observing Edna, Dr. Mandelet does not make any remarks about the behavior that Leonce has been noticing. Edna’s father comes to New Orleans to st ay for a few days before Janet’s wedding. Edna and her father have a dispute over Edna’s rejection to go to her sister’s wedding. Leonce is getting ready to leave for New York for business and her children are going to spend time with their grandmother. After being left alone, Edna senses a serenity environment which she hasn’t felt in a long time. Edna bounces back and forth between being sociable and being lonely. Edna becomes fond of going to horse races and meets Alcee there. Alcee and Edna grow close together and feelings for each other start to grow. Edna soon proclaims that she is moving out of her house for she fe els no sense of association with it anymore. Edna moves into the ―pigeon house‖ which she feels will give her independence and a place to be peaceful at. When Leonce finds out about Edna’s moving, he becomes upset with her. Leonce becomes embarrassed because the people might think they are having financial problems. To prevent people of thinking that, he plans to have his home remodeled and to plan a vacation for the two of them Edna visits Mademoiselle Reisz and finds that Robert is there and returned from Mexico. The two talk about all that has gone on while he has been gone. She questions him about the young Mexican girl, the absence in letters, etc. They go days without seeing each other again and run into each other in a café. They go back to her house and he admits that the reason he left was to escape his
