wearied wi’ huntin’, and fain would lie down”, followed by him repeating this for the last five stanzas: “mother, mak my bed soon, fir I’m sick at the heart, and fain would lie down.” In the second set of stanzas, Lord Randal voices that he is ‘sick at the heart’, meaning that he is saddened by the fact that his true love has tried to kill him, and they he cannot be with her. At this point in the ballad, Lord Randal’s mother knows the truth about what has happened to her son, but it is now too late for her to help him. If Lord Randal and his mother actually had a loving relationship, he would have never lied to her to begin with. During the time period in which this ballad takes place, people did not marry for love. People married others that would give them wealth, social status, and would benefit their families. If you did not marry someone that benefitted you and your family, it was seen as selfish and dishonorable. Lord Randal does exactly this; he falls in love with a woman of a lower social class, someone who would not give any benefit to the rest of his family.
