The Wheeling speech on February 9, 1950 was the spark of a new era in the United States, McCarthyism. Margaret Mary Barrett describes McCarthyism in American Social and Political Movements , 1945-2000, as, “Characterized by excessive trials, antiradical legislation and anti-communist propaganda, McCarthyism was instigated by the fear of the Soviet aggression. It was a paranoid reaction to Soviet advances in technology, espionage, and the political conversation of other nation in the postwar period. It was, in essence, a drastic domestic response to growing Soviet power.” McCarthyism was started by calling out individuals based on their stance of the Communist Party to created and chain explosion of terror and fright. The term McCarthyism became a nation-wide term that became a regular-use word, especially in the world of politics. McCarthyism started casted a shadow over the United States covering from east to west. One popular case that took over the west coast was the Hollywood Ten. In 1947, HUAC (The House Un-American Activities Committee) started an investigation in Hollywood claiming that nineteen people in the acting industry have been accused of being associated with the Communist political party. When their time came to testify in a court of law, ten of the nineteen refused to testify citing their Fifth Amendment right. These ten became known as the Hollywood Ten. These actors, screenwriters, and director/producers became blacklisted as know one wanted to work with nor be associated with a potential Communist Party supporter. The decline and fall of McCarthy came with the Army-McCarthy case. The hearings began on April 22, 1954 and continued until June 17 of the same year; they were broadcasted to over 20 million citizens of the United States mostly through ABC and DuMont. The case included thirty-two witnesses including the general of the U.S.
