engineering. Mary's co-worker, Zielinski, states to Mary that “a person with an engineer’s mind should be an engineer. You can’t be a Computer the rest of your life. That would be a tragic waste of your ability” ( Hidden Figures ). Mary has always thought like an engineer does and she has been mentally gifted for this field of study. Readers can infer that people like Zielinski have helped lead women to finding out how to push forward and beat gender stereotypes to raise up against inequality. This scene has shown the American dream because it starts to have the viewers believing that anything can be possible if you have a mindset for it. Women, like the

In an article about the importance of women in the STEM program, the author claims, “ When women are not seen as equals to men in this field, it especially affects girls. Girls and young women don’t see role models to motivate themselves and see themselves in that position. They are undermined by the idea that this is a ‘man’s field’ where girls don’t belong” (Lyons). The STEM program tends to be a male dominated area due to the fact that women have been seen as superior in the English field, rather than the mathematics and technology fields. When girls gets told that their dreams fall under an area that tends to typically only performed by men, then this lowers their self-esteem and they look down on themselves and underachieve in those classes. Parents and any adult should try to encourage these young girls that the STEM field could be for them, and this could encourage women to fight against the boundaries set by society. Women in the STEM field have always been oppressed and still tend to be today, but the women portrayed in this film start making this field acceptable for women to get into these types of studies.
