These two events in the novel are very similar and mirror each other in that they both symbolize a new chapter in Mariam’s life. During the time Mariam was prepared to marry Rasheed Hosseini wrote, “The next time Mariam signed her name to a document, twenty-seven years later, a mullah would be present again,” (p.54). This line foreshadows Mariam’s death at the end of the novel when the Mullah was present for her signing for her execution. Similarly, when it comes time for Mariam to end her life, Hosseini wrote, “As the three Taliban watched, Mariam wrote it out, her name—the meem, the reh, the yah, and the meem—remembering the last time she’d signed her name to a document, twenty-seven years before, at Jalil’s table, beneath the watchful gaze of another mullah,” (p. 366).
