Languages spoken in Mali are Bamana and Frech (Bambara, 2013). The typical American patient has full control over their own health care decisions. Health care providers will always follow what the patient requests (not what the family requests or wants). Females have just as many rights as males. Religious practices are typically Christianity based, but because the United States has a large variety of cultures, there are many religions practiced throughout the country. Diet typically includes fruits, vegetables, and meats. Most Americans eat an overabundance of processed foods and sugars. Family members may be involved with caring for a loved one, but most elderly adults are cared for in an assisted living facility, and family is not always around the ill while in a hospital setting. Conclusion Cultural competence is an important set of skills to provide adequate care to individual patients of different ethnic and culture backgrounds. Competency includes cultural awareness,

HERITAGE ASSESSMENT 6 cultural knowledge, religious practices, and alternative approaches used for healing. Using a heritage assessment tool allows a health care provider the ability to understand the involvement their patients have within their cultural and ethnic backgrounds. With this information, health care providers can better provide for their patients in a manner that provides true compassion. This will establish trust and a better rapport with each individual patient when a health care provider exhibits cultural competency when addressing health concerns.
